ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 39 University of Michigan men's tennis team opened its Big Ten Conference schedule with a 6-1 victory over No. 40 Northwestern Saturday afternoon (Feb. 26) at the Varsity Tennis Center. In a match that was closer than the final score indicates, the Wolverines (6-2, 1-0 Big Ten) swept the doubles point for the second time this season before earning victories in five of six singles matches, including three-set wins at Nos. 1, 4 and 6.
Sophomore Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and freshman Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimazija) gave Michigan the early momentum in doubles, earning an 8-6 victory over Chuck Perrin and Christian Tempke at No. 1. The U-M pair was leading 7-4 and serving for the match, but Perrin and Tempke won the next two games to cut the deficit to 7-6. Northwestern was unable to break Hung and Maravic's serve for a second time, however, as the Wolverines gained the eighth and deciding game.
Seniors David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 3, defeating Willy Lock and Justin Hoeveler 8-5. The two teams exchanged games throughout a majority of the match, until Anving and Gossain pulled away by claiming the final three games.
Just seconds after Michigan clinched the first team point, senior Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) and sophomore Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) completed the doubles sweep by outlasting Tommy Hanus and Adam Schaechterle 9-7 at No. 2.
Sophomore Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) and Maravic provided the Wolverines with a 3-0 lead in the match after collecting straight-set victories in their respective singles matches. Peretz disposed of Schaecterle by a 6-2, 7-5 score at No. 5 for his fifth win in seven tries. Maravic posted a 7-6(2), 6-2 decision over Perrin at No. 3, moving his dual match record to 6-2. Peretz and Maravic are tied for the team lead in overall singles victories at 11-6.
After Tempke handed Hung a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 defeat at No. 2 to narrow Michigan's lead to 3-1, Anving clinched the team victory with a comeback win over Matt Christian at No. 3. After dropping the first set 6-3, Anving battled back to even the match with a 7-6(5) win in the second frame. In the deciding set, Anving cruised to a 6-2 victory and wrapped up his 50th career singles victory at Michigan.
With the outcome already determined, senior Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) and Heller closed out their opponents at No. 1 and No. 4. Heller earned his fifth straight victory, defeating Lock 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Rubin capped off the scoring with a remarkable 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(7) victory over Hanus. Both Heller and Rubin move to 6-2 on the season.
