ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) is the lone representative from the University of Michigan men's tennis team remaining in the main singles draw at the 2005 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships after the first two rounds of competition Saturday (Oct. 22) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The No. 3 seed in the 64-player draw, Maravic defeated two opponents from the Big Ten Conference in three sets to advance to the round of 16.
Maravic, who is ranked No. 42 in the ITA preseason national rankings, got off to a slow start against Indiana's Dmytro Ishtuganov in the first round, dropping the first set 6-3. Maravic then turned it up a notch and took the final two sets, 6-1, 6-3. Maravic then needed another three sets to finish off Minnesota's Andres Osario (6-4, 3-6, 6-4) in the round of 32.
Two U-M players suffered second-round defeats in three sets. Junior Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School), who reached the singles final at last year's championships, fell to Notre Dame's No. 108-ranked Brett Helgeson 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 after putting away Louisville's Jhonny Berrido 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round. Freshman Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) opened with a 7-6(1), 5-7, 6-3 victory over Louisville's Robert Rotaru before being eliminated with a heartbreaking loss to Notre Dame's No. 74-ranked Stephen Bass, 6-7(15), 6-4, 6-3.
Junior Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) was unable to advance out of the first round, falling 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to Minnesota's Nic Edlefsen.
