ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan will be hosting the 2005 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Men's Regional Championships Oct. 20-25 at the Varsity Tennis Center. Admission is free of charge. The singles finalists and doubles champion from the event will earn spots in the 2005 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which Ohio State will host Nov. 3-6.
Junior Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) and freshmen Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and Scott Bruckmann (Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) will compete in the 64-player singles qualifying bracket, which begins Thursday (Oct. 20) at 2 p.m. Peretz, Aarts and Bruckmann will vie for eight qualifying spots into the main draw, which starts Saturday (Oct. 22) at 8 a.m.
Juniors Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) and Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School), sophomore Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) and freshman Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) have already secured spots in the 64-player main draw singles bracket.
The Wolverines will field four pairings in the 64-team main draw doubles competition. Hung and Maravic, Heller and Mazlin, Aarts and Peretz, and Bruckmann and Mike DePietro (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) will begin play following the completion of qualifying singles action on Friday (Oct. 21).
Seventeen ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. Michigan had a successful showing at last year's tournament, as Hung reached the singles final of the main draw. The 12th seed in the bracket, Hung defeated five opponents in straight sets en route to the championship final against Illinois' Ryler DeHeart. Hung put forth a valiant effort before falling 6-3, 6-4 to the No. 2 seed.
The 2005 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament, is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The first events -- the Riviera/ITA Women's and Polo Ralph Lauren Men's All-American Championships -- were held earlier this month, and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: qualifiers from these Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country, the ITA National Small College champions, top performers from the ITA All-American Championships and at-large card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 7,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.
Results will be regularly updated through e-Draws and posted on MGoBlue.com throughout the event. Participating SIDs and interested media members may also have results faxed or e-mailed to them by contacting Michigan Athletic Media Relations at (734) 763-4423.
