FAIRFAX, Calif. -- After a several records being set during the first 36 holes, the University of Michigan men's golf team ran into trouble during the final round of the 2005 Alister MacKenzie Invitational today (Tuesday, Oct. 11) as the Wolverines lost senior Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist HS) to injury during the final round but still managed to grind out a 295 team total garner a tie for fourth place finish with an 850 54-hole total among the prestigious 16-team field.
The Wolverines came storming out of the gate at the Meadow Club as they posted a U-M record-tying nine-under 275 during the first round after three Wolverines posted under 70 rounds, highlighted by sophomore Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) career-best five-under 66 and senior Brandon Duff (Goodrich, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) career-best three-under 68. The second round continued as the Wolverines posted their second straight under-par team total with a four-under 280, paced by the U-M record-tying and career-best seven-under 64 from Vozza.
With the start of the third round, Vozza felt stiffness in his left shoulder during warm-ups, but did his best to grind out through the first 15 holes before he and U-M coach Andrew Sapp decided to have him withdraw from the tournament. With Vozza out, the rest of the Wolverines closed out the tournament with a solid 295 team total to get the Maize and Blues third top five finish of the season.
Before withdrawing from the tournament, Vozza was atop the leaderboard after an outstanding 36-hole performance. He opened the tournament with a three-under 68 and followed with a U-M record-tying seven-under 64. In that second round, he ran into trouble early after bogeying the par-5 No. 1. Birdies on Nos. 4 and 9 helped Vozza make the turn one under. A birdie on the par-3 11th put him two under with seven holes to play. After three straight pars, a birdie on No. 15 followed by an eagle on No. 16, he closed with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to finish the round with a seven-under 64, tying the U-M record.
In spite of Vozza's injury, Ottenweller led the charge as he tied for third overall with a career-best five-under 207 54-hole tournament total. He set the pace early posting a career-best five-under 66 in the first round and followed it with a three-under 68 in the second. With Vozza out, he carded a two-over 73 in the final round to help secure the career best finish and total.
Duff followed as he tied for 40th with 218 54-hole total, his second best 54-hole tournament output. After opening with a career-best three-under 68 in the first round, he found struggles in breezy second round conditions carding a 76. He closed out with a three-over 74 in the final round. Other Wolverine finishes include: sophomore Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy), tied for 56th with a 221 total (73-75-73) and junior Kevin Dore (Dundas, Ontario/St. Mary's), tied for 65th with a 224 total (76-73-75).
Host Cal claimed its own tournament title as the Bears posted an eight-under 844 54-hole total (276-281-284).
