ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team held its annual Blue-White intrasquad game on Friday (Oct. 1) at Yost Ice Arena. Brandon Kaleniecki (Livonia, Mich.) and Travis Turnbull (Chesterfield, Mo.) both had two-goal games for the White team as it blew out the Blue team 8-2. Tim Miller (Davisburg, Mich.) had a goal and two assists for the White team, while T.J. Hensick (Howell, Mich.) paced the Blue team with a two-assist game.
The White team struck first at 6:18 of the first period shortly after killing off a power play. Tyler Swystun (Cochrane, Alberta) took a pass from Andrew Ebbett (Vernon, B.C.) near the left faceoff circle and skated in alone on goaltender Billy Sauer (Walworth, N.Y.), slipping the puck in high to the glove side. The White team extended its lead to 2-0 as Miller broke in alone on a shorthanded breakaway and put one in high on Sauer at 7:45. The White team nearly took a three-goal lead on the power play with just under nine minutes to play, but Sauer made two point-blank saves to keep the Blue team in the game.
The White team took a 3-0 lead just as time expired in the first period as Miller slid a puck up along the boards through the nuetral zone to Danny Fardig (Ann Arbor, Mich.). Fardig then snapped a shot in off the post high to the glove side at 19:59. The White team took a 3-0 advantage into the first intermission.
The White team moved the score to 4-0 early in the second period at 2:16. Kaleniecki took a backhand pass from Ebbett in the slot and one-timed it past Sauer. Turnbull extended the lead to 5-0 on the power-play at 8:59. David Rohlfs (Northville, Mich.) took a slap shot low toward the net and Turnball tipped the shot past Sauer. The Blue team's best chance of the period came with just over seven minutes to play in the second as Andrew Cogliano (Woodbridge, Ontario) gathered a loose puck in front of goaltender Mike Mayhew (Owatonna, Minn.) but could not lift the puck over Mayhew's glove.
Kaleniecki netted his second goal of the game at 17:40 to put the White team up 6-0. Kaleniecki carried the puck in and ripped a shot low to the stick side past Sauer. The second period ended with the White team up 6-0.
Team White wasted no time in the third period and tallied its seventh goal of the game at 2:00. Jason Dest (Fraser, Mich.) barely kept the puck in and slid a pass to Tim Cook (Monclair, N.J.). Cook fed one down low to Ebbett, who redirected it in to make the score 7-0. Turnbull notched his second goal of the game at 6:08 off a centering pass from Miller to put the White team up 8-0.
The Blue team finally got on the board at 11:30 as Chad Kolarik (Abington, Pa.) corralled a pass from Hensick at the top the circle and snapped one by Mayhew to move the score to 8-1. Kevin Porter (Northville, Mich.) made the score 8-2 at 18:50 shorthanded. Porter took a feed from Coglliano in the crease and tipped one by Mayhew.
The Wolverines face the University of Toronto tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 2) at 4 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena to wrap up their preseason exhibition schedule.
