Civic Nets Pair of Goals to Lead Michigan Over Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Matching a career-best two goals, sophomore Jill Civic (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus HS) led the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 4-1 decision over No. 16 Indiana in their Big Ten Conference opener on Friday (Sept. 24) at the Hoosier's Mellencamp Pavilion. Senior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican) also registered a multi-point effort in the Wolverine victory, scoring a goal and an assist to push her season scoring streak to nine games.
Sophomore Mary Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) put Michigan ahead early in the contest, tipping a hard shot from Blake just 3:07 into the opening frame for a career-high third goal of the season.
Civic tallied her goals back-to-back on either side of the halftime intermission, scoring the eventual game-winner at 23:41 to give U-M a two-goal lead at the break and adding an assurance marker at 50:20, tipping a shot from sophomore Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) past Hoosier goalkeeper Katie Kanara.
Indiana's lone goal of the game came at the 54:50 mark as Morgan Miller scored off a Hoosier penalty corner to cut the Wolverine advantage to two goals midway through the second half. IU could not maintain the momentum, however, as the Maize and Blue responded just 36 seconds later with Blake's unassisted goal at the 55:26 mark.
Michigan controlled the ball throughout the game, outshooting IU 15-6 to claim the victory -- including a 9-1 differential in the second half -- and out-cornering the Hoosiers 9-6. Sophomore Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) collected two saves for Michigan while Katie Kanara made four stops in the losing effort.
The Wolverines will wrap up their weekend road series on Sunday (Sept. 26) against Ball State in Muncie, Ind. The contest is slated to begin at 1 p.m. EST/CDT at BSU Turf Field.
