MUNCIE, Ind. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team used a balanced attack to shut out Ball State 4-0 and win its fourth straight match on Sunday (Sept. 26). Senior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican) played a hand in each of the Wolverines markers, recording two goals and two assists to extend her scoring streak to 10 games.
Blake put the Wolverines on the board early, scoring an unassisted goal at the 5:31 mark from point-blank range in front of the Cardinal cage to give the Wolverines the only advantage they would need. Blake added her second marker of the contest at 39:35 to kick off a strong U-M second half as the Wolverine senior corralled the ball at the top of the circle and blasted it past Ball State goalkeeper Tracy Bannister.
Senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) and junior/sophomore Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) rounded out the Wolverines scoring in the contest with goals coming at 42:39 and 47:40 as Michigan dominated the second half, holding BSU to just one shot. Hortillosa recorded her goal off a U-M corner, collecting the ball low in the circle and firing it into the left corner. Morris collected her seventh marker of the season just five minutes later, converting on a low shot to the center of the Cardinal cage.
Michigan outshot the Cardinals 23-5 -- including a 12-1 differential in the second frame -- and out-cornered them 11-4. Sophomore goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palymra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) earned the shutout, stopping a pair of first-half shots on goal, while fifth-year senior goalkeeper Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) tallied 18:08 in playing time against the Cardinals, entering the game midway through the second half. For Ball State, Bannister registered six totals saves, including five in the first half.
The Wolverines will return home for a pair of matches on Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 2-3), hosting Northwestern and Harvard at Ocker Field. Michigan is slated to play the Wildcats at 1 p.m. on Saturday before closing out the weekend with a 1 p.m. contest against the Crimson on Sunday.
