WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team suffered a sweep at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge for the second consecutive year as two-time defending NCAA champion Wake Forest notched a 3-1 decision over the Wolverines on Sunday (Aug. 29) at Kentner Stadium.
After Wake Forest gained the initial lead on a goal by Tamar Meijer at the 9:23 mark of the contest, senior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican) tallied the lone U-M goal on a penalty corner to even the score 1-1 late in the first half. Senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) recorded her 28th career assist on the play, moving her to fourth on the U-M career assists list, tied with three-time All-American Kelli Gannon (1997-2000).
The Demon Deacons went on the attack in the second half, setting up a pair of penalty corners early in the frame to keep the Wolverines on the defensive. Meijer broke the tie with her second goal of the game to put Wake Forest ahead for good with the eventual game-winner at the 47:23 mark. As the U-M defense pressed late in the game, the Deacons posted an insurance goal at 66:16 as Kelly Dostal sealed the Wake Forest victory.
Michigan was outshot 22-9 in the contest, including 13-4 in the second half. For the second time in as many games this season, sophomore Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) was solid in the U-M goal, posting nine saves with six coming in the second frame. Kristina Gagliardi recorded five saves for the Wake Forest win.
The Wolverines continue their opening road series in the Northeast on Tuesday (Aug. 31), traveling to Orono, Maine, to face the Maine Black Bears at 3 p.m. U-M wraps up the series on Thursday (Sept. 2) at 2 p.m., facing New Hampshire in Durham, N.H.
