ORONO, Maine -- Seniors Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) and Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican) tallied multi-goal efforts to lead the University of Michigan field hockey team to its first win of the 2004 season, defeating Maine 4-3 in overtime on Tuesday (Aug. 31) at Morse Field at Harold Alfond Sports Stadium.
Hortillosa collected her second goal of the game seven minutes into the extra frame to cap a late dominating performance for the Wolverines. U-M outshot the Black Bears 11-1 in the second frame and shut them down completely in overtime with a 4-0 shot advantage. In addition to her pair of goals, Hortillosa rounded out her performance with an assist in the first half to match a career high with five points.
Blake registered a career-best two goals in the contest, moving the ball past Maine goalkeeper Jamie Morin twice in the first half to bookend a pair of Black Bear goals. The Wolverine senior opened the scoring just 2:29 into the game to give U-M the initial advantage. After Maine stole the lead with goals by Rachael Hilgar and Liz Mendell, Blake tallied her second at the 26:24 mark -- just under five minutes after Maine's second goal -- to even the score 2-2 heading into the halftime intermission.
Hortillosa put U-M back into the lead midway through the second half, scoring an unassisted goal at the 51:40 mark, but the Black Bears responded just four minutes later on Hilgar's second goal of the game to knot the score at 3-3 and send it into overtime.
Senior Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) made two saves in her season debut to earn her 28th career win. Maine's Morin made eight saves on 12 shots on goal in the loss as Michigan outshot the Black Bears 21-6 and out-cornered Maine 15-4.
The Wolverines will wrap up its opening road series on Thursday (Sept. 2) against New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. The game is slated for a 2 p.m. start at the Wildcats' Memorial Field.
