ATHENS, Greece -- University of Michigan men's track and field volunteer assistant coach Tim Broe earned a trip to the 5,000-meter run final after recording a time of 13:20.29 -- the second-fastest clocking of his career -- during the first round of the event on Wednesday (Aug. 25) at the 2004 Olympic Games.
Broe claimed sixth place in the second and faster heat of the 5,000-meter first round, and despite missing the last automatic qualifying spot by 0.26 seconds, the American netted the first of five additional time qualifying positions with his performance. Broe set the pace late in the race, pushing to the front with five laps remaining to lead the 18-man field through the 4,000-meter mark at 10:52.69.
Despite giving up the lead and gradually dropping back, Broe stayed among the leaders late in the race, hanging to the third position with just 300 meters remaining before losing another three positions in the final kick. Broe posted a 2:27.6 split in his final 1,000 meters to cross the line just 1.35 seconds behind heat winner Ali Said Sief of Algeria.
Broe will return to the track on Saturday (Aug. 28) for the final of the 5,000-meter run at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece. The race is slated to start at 9:05 p.m. local time (2:05 p.m. EDT).
