Brannen Wraps Up European Tour, Prepares for Trials

PADOVA, Italy -- Junior Nate Brannen (Cambridge, Ontario/Preston HS) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team wrapped up his European tour with another solid 800-meter performance Sunday (July 4) at the Meeting Citta di Padova. In the slowest race of the his recent competition schedule, the Wolverine sophomore registered a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:47.44.
Brannen went out with the leaders, running in the top three through a slow 0:52 split at the race's halfway point. Down the backstretch, the Wolverine took off with the leaders -- Italy's Andrea Longo and Burundi's Jean Patrick Nduwimana -- and the trio led the seven-man field through the final bend. Brannen began to tie up in last 100 meters as a pair of competitors moved around him down the final stretch.
Brannen will join U-M teammate Andrew Ellerton (Sudbury, Ontario/Confederation HS) and former Wolverine Kevin Sullivan at the Canadian Senior Track and Field Championships and Olympic Trials Friday through Sunday (July 9-11) in Victoria, B.C. Brannen and Ellerton will compete in the preliminary round of the 800-meter run at 12:35 p.m. PDT Saturday, with the 800-meter final scheduled for Sunday at 1:40 p.m. Sullivan will run in the 1,500-meter first round at 5:55 p.m. Friday, with the final slated for 11:50 a.m. Saturday.
U-M volunteer assistant coach Tim Broe and former Wolverine standout John Mortimer will compete in the 5,000-meter run and the 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively, in the U.S. Olympic Trials, scheduled for Friday through Sunday (July 9-18) in Sacramento, Calif. The semifinal of the 5,000-meter run is slated for 8:45 p.m. PDT Monday (July 12), with the final taking place Friday (July 16) at 8:55 p.m. The 3,000-meter steeplechase will kick off with the semifinal at 7:55 p.m. Monday and continue with the final at 8:45 p.m. Thursday (July 15).
