Vozza Advances to First Round of Michigan Amateur

GROSSE ILE, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's golfer Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist HS) advanced to the first round before being eliminated from the 93rd Michigan Amateur Championship, held Tuesday through Saturday (June 22-26) at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club. Vozza lost 4 and 3 to Rick Williams.
Vozza fired back-to-back rounds of 75 giving him a 150 stroke play total, putting him in a tie for 21st to qualify for the field of 64. In his first round match Wednesday morning, Williams defeated Vozza, 4 and 3, eliminating him from the championship. Vozza qualified for the Amateur after carding a 74 in the local qualifier at Pheasant Run Golf Club in Canton, Mich. (May 11).
In addition to Vozza, the Maize and Blue had two other participants at the Amateur Championship. Dave Turner (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) missed the match-play cut off by two strokes after he tied for 80th with rounds of 78 and 80 (158). Turner had an exemption from qualifying for the Amateur since he was a sectional qualifier for the 2004 U.S. Open. Turner carded rounds of 81-78/159 at the Wynstone Golf Club in North Barington, Ill., to make it to the qualifier for the U.S. Open.
Jimmy Wisinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) also missed the qualifying mark as he tied for 113th with a 162-stroke play total (83-79). Wisinski qualified for the Amateur championship after carding a 77 at the Moor in Harbor Springs, Mich. (May 27).
Fellow Wolverine's Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) and Mark McIntosh (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord HS) also competed at the Moor, but did not qualify for the field. Tighe was the first alternate after carding a 77, while McIntosh shot an 80.
Steve Cozzort defeated Matt Harmon, 3 and 2, to win the 2004 Michigan Amateur Championship. For complete results, visit the Michigan Amateur website.
