HILLSDALE, Mich. -- Several members of the University of Michigan men's track and field team registered solid performances at the Hillsdale "Gina" Relays on Friday and Saturday (April 23-24). Junior/sophomore Darren Adams (Mentor, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS) and sophomore Spencer Dowdall (Coral Spring, Fla./Coral Springs HS) led the Wolverines with second-place finishes in the high jump and pole vault, respectively.
Adams recorded his best mark of the outdoor campaign, jumping 6-8 to claim runner-up honors among the 17-man field. The Wolverine sophomore matched the height of event-winner Jeff Kus but was unable clear the bar on his first attempt. Sophomore Brad Miller (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion HS) claimed sixth place in the event with a jump of 6-6.
Dowdall earned his second consecutive runner-up performance in the pole vault with a mark of 15-6 1/4, just one-inch below his personal best, which he set last weekend at the EMU Twilight Meet (April 17). Junior/sophomore Craig Theissen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny HS) also placed among the top-five, clearing a mark of 15-0 1/4 for fourth place.
On the track, the Wolverines placed three finishers within the top-20 in the 1,500-meter run as senior/junior Brian Turner (Omaha, Neb./Millard North HS), sophomore/freshman Todd Iacovelli (Kailua, Hawaii/Punahou HS) and sophomore Joe Schramski (Troy, Mich./Avondale HS) finished 14th, 18th and 19th, respectively, among the 84-man field. With a time of 3:56.72, Iacovelli shaved 3.72 seconds from his previous personal best in the event.
U-M will return to action next Friday and Saturday (April 20-May 1) in Columbus, Ohio for the 19th annual Jesse Owen Classic at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
