SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Senior/junior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS) was one of eight members of the University of Michigan women's track and field team sent to compete in the two-day, non-scoring Alex Wilson Invitational, and she took full advantage of the last chance to qualify for the next week's NCAA Indoor Championships. Gallo clocked in with an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 800-meter run on the final day of action Saturday (March 6) at Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Complex.
Gallo has already qualified in two other individual events, the mile and 3,000-meter run, and as the anchor of Michigan's distance medely relay, and she was just competing in the race as a training tool for the upcoming national championship meet. Nonetheless, Gallo turned in a personal-best 2:07.97 for fifth-place in the race. The time was 1.03 seconds under the NCAA "B" standard of 2:09.00 and bettered her previous best time by 2.34 seconds, as her old mark stood at 2:10.34 set last year at the Len Paddock Invitational (5/10/03).
Also competing in the 800, junior/sophomore Stephanie Hirtle (Salmon Arm, B.C./Salmon Arm Senior) finished 20th in 2:14.85.
In addition to the two 800 runners, Anna Jones (Omaha, Neb./Marian HS) placed 16th in the mile, clocking in with a time of 4:58.48. Senior Robin Landfair (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) turned in a third-place showing in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.60. During the prelims of the event, Landfair won her heat with a time of 8.51.
Michigan's other two athletes, senior/junior Lynn Gasparella (New Hudson, Mich./South Lyon HS) and sophomore/freshman Kelly Catino (Traverse City, Mich./Cental HS), competed in the pole vault. Gasparella led the Maize and Blue effort in the event, finishing seventh with a vault of 11-9, while Catino cleared 11-3 and placed 16th.
The Wolverines will send at least four athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., next Friday and Saturday (March 12-13). Depending on the performances around the nation this weekend, Michigan could also send Landfair to the national championship meet, as she has a NCAA "B" standard time of 8.41 in the 60-meter hurdles.
