CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team earned its second tournament victory of the season and its first of the spring this Sunday and Monday (March 28-29) at the Saluki Invitational at Hickory Ridge Golf Course. Junior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) paced the Wolverines and earned the second tournament victory of her career with a 148 (73-75) 36-hole total.
| | Olin is the first Wolverine to win twice in a season since Wendy Bigler in 1991-92. |
Olin held second place after day one, with her one-over-par 73 leaving her down one stroke to Illinois State's Hilary Anderson. With Anderson coming back with an 80 on day two, Olin's 75 gave her enough for medalist honors with a two-stroke lead. The junior led all individuals in both par-4 and par-5 scoring, also tallying six birdies for a second-place mark overall.
Along with Olin, the Wolverines had two others in the top 10. Freshman Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) came in seventh for the best tournament finish in her young career. Stinson opened with a three-over 76 before carding an 80 in her second round to finish eight behind Olin. Sophomore Amy Schmucker (Cold Springs, Minn./Rocori HS) finished tied for 10th, showing an amazing comeback between rounds. After shooting an 84 to leave her 32nd after day one, Schmucker tallied a three-over 75 to boost her 22 spots in the standings for her second top-10 finish of the season.
Other Michigan finishes included: freshman Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), tied for 22nd (82-82/164); sophomore Brandi Zielinski (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy), tied for 35th (79-89/168); and sophomore Kelly Easton (Port Huron, Mich./Northern HS), tied for 40th (87-82/169).
The Wolverines will head out to Big Ten country for the next three tournament stops. The Maize and Blue first head to Bloomington, Ind., Saturday and Sunday (April 3-4) for the 54-hole Hoosier Invitational at the IU Golf Course. At last year's tournament, former Wolverine Kim Benedict took medalist honors with an even-par performance of 222 (72-74-76).
