Wolverines Finish in 13th Place at NCAA Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team finished in 13th place with 114.5 points at the 2004 NCAA Championships, held at Texas A&M's Student Recreation Center Natatorium. The Wolverines were unable to qualify any athletes for championship finals on the last day (Saturday, March 20) but did send three swimmers and one relay team to consolation finals. Auburn won its third consecutive team championship with 569 points, the highest total at the national meet since 1993.

Junior Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy HS) provided U-M with another All-America honorable mention finish, clocking in at 55.49 in the 100-meter freestyle for 13th place. Freshman Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) took 34th place (56.01).
In the final event of the championships, Michigan's quartet of Smith, senior Anne Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS), sophomore Abby Seskevics (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) and McCullough placed 15th in the 400-meter freestyle relay with a time of 3:44.45 to round out the scoring for the Wolverines.
Michigan was unable to qualify any athletes for three event finals. Senior Sara Johnson (West Bloomfield, Mich./Lahser HS) took 31st in the 200-meter backstroke with a preliminary mark of 2:14.24, while senior Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson HS) placed 30th in the 200-meter breaststroke race at 2:31.80. In her final diving competition as a Wolverine, senior Tealin Kelemen (Riverton, N.J./Moorestown Friends School) scored 331.70 on the platform board for 23rd place.

Emily-Clare Fenn earned her fourth career NCAA All-America honorable mention award after a 10th-place finish in the 1,500-meter freestyle. Fenn also claimed the honor on the first day of competition with a ninth-place showing in the 400-meter freestyle.
Susan Gilliam collected her first career NCAA All-America honorable mention citation after a 13th-place finish in the 1,500-meter freestyle.
Amy McCullough picked up her fourth and fifth career NCAA All-America honorable mention awards (100-meter freestyle, 400-meter freestyle relay). McCullough won her three previous awards at last year's NCAA meet.
Lindsey Smith captured her third career NCAA All-America honorable mention (400-meter freestyle relay. Her two previous awards came earlier in the championships (200-meter freestyle, 200-meter freestyle relay).
Abby Seskevics' NCAA All-America honorable mention in the 400-meter freestyle relay was her third of the championships and the fourth of her career.
Anne Weilbacher's NCAA All-America honorable mention nomination in the 400-meter freestyle is the 12th of her career.
Susan Gilliam was U-M's top individual finisher at this year's championships with an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle. Michigan top relay finish was the team of Lindsey Smith, Gilliam, Emily-Clare Fenn and Amy McCullough, who placed seventh in the 800-meter freestyle race.
Michigan finished the 2004 NCAA Championships with a total of nine individual All-American nominations and 19 individual All-America honorable mention citations.
Head coach Jim Richardson has led Michigan to a top-15 finish at the NCAA Championships 16 times in 19 seasons.
Ann Arbor native and Pioneer High School graduate Kara Lynn Joyce, who swims for the University of Georgia, finished her first career NCAA Championships with two individual national championships (50-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle) and was part of three championship relay teams (200-meter freestyle, 400-meter freestyle, 400-meter medley). Joyce set an American record of 24.21 in the preliminaries of the 50-meter freestyle Thursday morning (March 18) before helping the 200-meter freestyle relay squad to a world record time of 1:37.27 later that evening.
A total of 39 records were set at the meet, including two world, nine American, 12 U.S. Open and 16 NCAA marks. An NCAA meet record was set in every swimming event.
