Michigan Earns Extra-Inning Win Over Eastern Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The 12th-ranked Michigan softball team moved to 3-0 at the Louisville Invitational, but it took extra innings to dispose of Eastern Kentucky 3-2 Saturday (March 20) at Ulmer Stadium. Pitcher Jennie Ritter (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) dominated with 13 strikeouts but was touched for eight hits and a home run, while Tiffany Haas (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill HS) led the offensive attack, going 2-4 and scoring all three Wolverine runs.
Haas scored the game-winner in the top of the eighth after being placed on second to begin the inning due the international tiebreaker rule. She eventually scored from third on a run-scoring single by Jennifer Olds (North Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast HS). Ritter shut down EKU in its half of the eighth, stranding the potential tying run on third with her 13th K of the game.
Haas opened the scoring in the top of the first when she singled and came around to score on a double from Jessica Merchant (Wayland, Mich./Wayland HS). The was short-lived, however, as a one-out walk preceded a two-run home run off Ritter for a 2-1 EKU lead. The Wolverines immediately tied the game back up in the top of the second when Haas doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Meghan Doe (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS).
Neither team really threatened again until the sixth, when Michigan put a runner on third with two outs but could not cash in. Ritter lived dangerously in the sixth and seventh, stranding five runners, including the bases loaded in the sixth, and getting out of both jams with strikeouts.
The Wolverines conclude the Louisville Invitational tomorrow (March 21) with a single contest against host Louisville at 2 p.m.
