Haas Continues Hot Hitting as Michigan Dumps Toledo

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The 12th-ranked University of Michigan softball team opened up action at the Louisville Invitational with a complete 5-1 victory over Toledo at Ulmer Stadium. Current Big Ten Player of the Week Tiffany Haas (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill HS) remained one of the Wolverines' hottest hitters, going 3-4 with an RBI and leading Michigan's contingent that pounded out 13 hits. The Wolverine pitching continued to do its job as Nicole Motycka (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney HS) struck out 10 and walked none while allowing one earned run to gain her team-best ninth win of the season.
As has been the case for much of the season, the Wolverines jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a pair of seniors. Maybe Michigan's two most consistent players, Meghan Doe (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) and Jennifer Olds (North Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast HS) combined for the early lead when Doe singled with one out, stole second and scored on Olds' two-out single. It was Olds' team-leading 10th two-out RBI of the season.
Motycka allowed just one hit through the first three innings before the Wolverines opened things up in the fourth. The Wolverines put together six of their 13 hits in the fourth inning alone, with the sophomore third baseman Grace Leutele (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena HS) drilling a two-run single to right-center. Haas and Doe added RBI singles as the Michigan lead stretched to 5-0.
Toledo scratched across its lone run in the fifth when it put together three straight two-out singles with a runner on to trim the deficit to 5-1. The Rockets' only other threat came in the seventh when Toledo put together back-to-back singles, but Courtney Betley (Corona, Calif./Santa Ana Mater Dei HS) gunned down a runner trying to advance to third to quell the rally.
