U-M Closes Regular Season with Silverston Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team hosted its final regular-season meet of the indoor season with the Harold Silverston Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 21) at the U-M Indoor Track Building. The Wolverines earned a pair of individual victories as the team prepared for the postseason.
Freshman Ethan Brown (Lowell, Mass./Lowell HS) became the fifth Wolverine newcomer to earn his first collegiate win of the season, leading the field of seven competitors in the 3,000-meter run. Brown clocked a personal-best 8:41.25 to outpace runner-up James Gosselin from Windsor by 0.53 seconds.
The Wolverines also collected their third win of the season in the 4x400-meter relay as the U-M foursome of freshman Sebastien Lounis (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Seahom HS), fifth-year senior Dan Cooke (Pinckney, Mich./Pinchney HS), junior Rondell Ruff (Detroit, Mich./Henry Ford HS) and senior Brian Turner (Omaha, Neb./Millard North HS) clocked a winning time of 3:25.34.
Freshman Chris McHugh (Nokington, R.I./Bishop Hendrickson HS) boasted his top performance of the season in the weight throw, hitting a mark of 52-8 to place third among the 13-man field. Junior/sophomore Darren Adams (Mentor, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS) also turned in a top-three performance in the high jump, clearing 6-8 3/4 to tie Michigan State's Brian Sherwood for second place in the event.
Junior/sophomore captain Craig Theissen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny HS) and sophomore Spencer Dowdall (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs HS) both recorded their best marks of the season in the pole vault. Theissen cleared 15-6 1/2 to place seventh in the event. The mark was a new personal best for the Wolverine captain, shaving 1/4 inch from his previous best mark. Dowdall earned ninth place in the pole vault with a mark of 15-0 1/4.
Michigan will host the Big Ten Conference Men's Track and Field Championships next Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 28-29) at the U-M Indoor Track Building. Competition kicks off Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with the heptathalon.
