ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team completed its sweep of Miami (Ohio) in this weekend's home series with a 5-3 victory on Saturday (Nov. 6). U-M was up 3-0 in the contest, but Miami's second- and third-period goals kept the RedHawks' hopes alive throughout the third until Jeff Tambellini (Port Moody, B.C.) scored the eventual game-winner with 2:38 remaining.
Just eight seconds into the contest, offsetting penalties left the Wolverines and RedHawks skating four-on-four. With Al Montoya (Glenview, Ill.) down at 1:30, Miami's Mitch Ganzak faced an open net but fired wide to the left.
The first period remained scoreless until 17:40 when David Moss (Livonia, Mich.) stuffed the puck past Miami goaltender Brandon Crawford-West from the right slot. Tambellini carried the puck through the neutral zone with Moss beside him for the two-on-one. Tambellini passed sideways across the top of the circle to Moss, who beat Crawford-West on the right post.
Only a minute later, Nick Martens (Ann Arbor, Mich.) wristed the puck from the left point, and David Rohlfs (Northville, Mich.) finished Michigan's second goal with a tip from close range at 18:30. The first period ended with the Maize and Blue leading 2-0.
During a RedHawk penalty kill, Crawford-West made two sprawling saves on Brandon Kaleniecki (Livonia, Mich.) and Chad Kolarik (Abington, Pa.) to hold Michigan to a two-goal lead in the opening minutes of the second frame.
At 6:18, Kolarik notched a power-play goal on a bad-angle shot from the left corner. After he controlled the puck from behind the net, Kolarik found the open five-hole to give the Wolverines the three-goal lead.
Nino Musitelli cut the deficit to 3-1 at 13:23, beating Montoya on the right side top-shelf from the left circle. The goal came just as a Michigan penalty expired.
Miami brought the game within one 4:57 into the third period as Joe Pomaranski caught a pass from Taylor Hustead down low. Pomaranski chipped it up, and although Montoya dove to get a piece of the puck, it landed in the Wolverine net.
Moss and Tambellini teamed up again and produced late in the third frame. Moss won the faceoff back to Tambellini, who fired one high into the net from the top of the circle at 17:22, extending Michigan's lead to 4-2.
Skating with an extra attacker in place of Crawford-West, Miami tallied another point at 19:24 as Matt Christie passed to Chris Michael, who beat Michigan's netminder on the right post.
An empty-net goal, coming just moments later at 19:42 by Tambellini, sealed the game for the Wolverines with a final 5-3 score.
Michigan will be off next weekend but will play Michigan State in East Lansing in two weeks on Thursday, Nov. 18. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m.
