Hung, Heller Reach Quarterfinals at Midwest Regional

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Two members of the University of Michigan men's tennis team have earned berths in the quarterfinals of the 2004 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center. Sophomore Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) has reached the round of eight in the 64-player main draw singles bracket, while Hung and classmate Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) are one of eight doubles pairings left in the 64-team main draw doubles competition.
Hung, the 12th seed in the singles draw, posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Notre Dame's Barry King Sunday (Oct. 24) in the round of 16. Hung has not surrendered one set in each of his three wins at the ITA Regional. He will face No. 1 seed Jakub Praibis of Indiana tomorrow (Monday, Oct. 25) at 9 a.m.
Hung then teamed up with Heller for a pair of doubles wins. The 10th-seeded U-M tandem defeated Michigan State's Adam Monich and Michael Flowers 8-3 in the second round of play. Hung and Heller kept rolling through the bracket with an 8-6 victory over Indiana's No. 9 seed of Ryan Recht and John Stone to advance to the quarterfinals.
Heller and Hung will square off against Ohio State's Drew Eberly and Ross Wilson tomorrow following the completion of the four singles quarterfinal matches, which begin at 9 a.m.
