ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team earned a pair of doubles victories in the first round of main draw competition Friday (Oct. 22) at the 2004 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Varisty Tennis Center. The tandem of sophomores Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) and Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and the duo of senior Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and sophomore Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) both earned wins on the first day of doubles action.
Heller and Hung had a fairly easy time with Minnesota's Nick Edlefson and Chi Pham, defeating the Golden Gopher pair by an 8-2 score. Gossain and Peretz made it two-for-two for Michigan with an 8-5 defeat of Indiana State's Aaron Phillips and Anton Tsymbalov. Senior Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) and freshman Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) fought back from a 4-1 deficit but eventually fell 9-8(4) to Northwestern's Tommy Hanus and Chuck Perrin in the final U-M match of the day.
The Wolverines were unable to advance their two athletes in qualifying singles, Fischer and Gossain, into the main draw bracket. Fischer earned an impressive 6-3, 6-0 victory over Wisconsin's Elliott Bisnow in the second round but dropped a close match to Western Michigan's Tim Bradshaw in one of eight qualifying finals, 2-6, 7-6(8), 7-6(2). Gossain was eliminated from qualifying singles competition with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 loss to Michigan State's Adam Monich in the second round.
Tennis action continues tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 23) with the first round of main draw singles beginning at 8 a.m.
