ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Seniors Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) and Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team earned convincing first-round victories Thursday (Oct. 21) in singles qualifying of the 2004 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Varisty Tennis Center. With two more wins, each would secure one of eight spots in the main draw, which begins Saturday (Oct. 23) at 8 a.m.

Gossain, the ninth seed in the bracket, easily defeated Western Michigan's RK Bacalla, 6-2, 6-0 in evening singles action. It was Gossain's second win over Bacalla in five days, as he earned a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at the Wolverine Invitational last Sunday (Oct. 17).
Fischer will meet Wisconsin's Elliott Bisnow in the second round tomorrow (Friday, Oct. 22) at 10 a.m. Gossain will face Michigan State's Adam Monich following the completion of the 10 a.m. match on their respective court.
