Last time on the Links: Broderick Leads U-M to Mary Fossum Title
Leading from start to finish, Brianna Broderick won her first collegiate medalist honors by seven strokes and paced the Wolverines to their second straight tournament title at the 2004 Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 18-19) at the Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich. The Maize and Blue tallied scores of 306, 303 and 310 to give them a 919 54-hole total and a six shot victory. Broderick opened up her first collegiate trophy run posting back-to-back even-par 72s and closed out with a 75 to give her a 219 total. Could This be Even More Dj Vu
The last time the Wolverines opened the season with two-straight wins was during the 2001-02 season. In that same season the Wolverines went 4-0 in the fall. What is interesting is that the third tournament the Wolverines won in the fall of 2001 was the Shootout at the Legends, which just happens to be U-M's third tournament in the fall of 2004. Later that 2001 season, the Maize and Blue went to their second straight NCAA Regional appearance and advanced to the program's first ever appearance at the NCAA Championships, where they finished 17th.
Wolverines 19th in Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Rating
Behind back-to-back tournament wins, the Wolverines have vaulted themselves into the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Rating Top 25, as the Wolverines are 19th as of the Sept. 19 rankings. The Maize and Blue, who are among three Big Ten teams in the top 25, have a performance rating of 73.72. Duke sits atop the poll with a rating of 70.79, with Washington (71.29) second and Arizona State (71.62) third. In the individual rankings, a pair of Wolverines cracked into the Top 50. Sophomore Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) is in the 28th spot (71.84), while senior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) is 45th (72.48).
What a Way to Begin the Season!
With the 2004 Mary Fossum Invitational team title and 2004 Lady Northern Invitational trophy, the Wolverines have won their first two tournaments of the season. The last time the Wolverines won two straight tournaments was at the start of the 2001-02 season, where the Maize and Blue went a perfect 4-0 in the fall season.
What This Title Means In the History Books
With the Mary Fossum Invitational title, the Wolverines now have won 24 team titles in team history. The team crystal also marks Michigan coach Kathy Teichert's 16th title in her 12 seasons with the Wolverines. With the team victory at the Mary Fossum, the Wolverines have now won two team titles in back-to-back seasons. In addition, the two victories in two weeks gives the Wolverines at least one tournament title in four of the last five seasons.
Holding on to the Lead
For the second tournament in a row, the Wolverines have led after the first 36-holes and closed out the tournament with a win. The Maize and Blue had a three stroke lead after the first day of the Mary Fossum Invitational and closed out with a six stroke win. A week earlier, the Wolverines were tied with Missouri for the overall lead after the first day of the Lady Northern Invitational and closed with a four stroke win.
Broderick Joins Exclusive Group
With medalist honors at the Mary Fossum Invitational, Brianna Broderick recorded her first career collegiate tournament win. The title makes her the 12th Wolverine to win a title and gives the Wolverine program their 19th overall medalist trophy. Broderick is the first U-M sophomore to win an event since Kim Benedict in 2001.
Title Gives Broderick Career Numbers
En route to her first collegiate title, Brianna Broderick set a career-best 54-tourmament total along the way. Her 219 tally was a career-best by four strokes. A week prior she recorded the 223 at the Lady Northern Invitational.
A Wolverine Presence
In two tournaments this season, Brianna Broderick, Laura Olin and Ali Stinson have place in the top 10 of each tournament. Dating back to last season, the Wolverines have had at least one competitor finish among the top 20 in eight straight tournaments.
Spalding Making the Most of Her Time
Despite playing as an individual for the second straight week, Molly Spalding set a new career best with a tie for ninth showing at the Mary Fossum Invitational. She topped the tie for 10th she had last season at the 2003 Wolverine Invitational (Oct. 4-5). She also set a new career-best single round score of 73 in the second round of the Mary Fossum. Her previous best of 74 was set in the third round of the 2004 Lady Northern Invitational.
Streaks Extending and Coming Close to All-Time Mark
Laura Olin extended her consecutive tournament streak to 40 by playing at the 2004 Mary Fossum Invitational. She has not missed a tournament in her three seasons. Amy Schmucker sits at 26 straight tournaments, while Brianna Broderick and Ali Stinson have played in 14 straights tournaments for the Maize and Blue. Former Wolverine Kim Benedict (2000-03) holds the U-M record, playing in all 49 tournaments during her four-year career.
