ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore forward Katie Kramer (Andover, Mass./Andover HS) scored her first career goal 57 seconds into the game to help lead the University of Michigan women's soccer team past Wisconsin 2-0 Friday afternoon (Sept. 26) at the U-M Soccer Field. The Wolverines were outshot 14-9 in the game, but Kramer's early tally and junior Kate Morgan's (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) insurance goal in the final minutes allowed U-M (2-4-3, 1-1-1 Big Ten) to secure its first conference win of the season.

The Badgers looked to tie the game eight minutes later, as Kara Kabellis controlled a Wisconsin corner kick in front and blasted a shot on net. Junior midfielder Robyn Vince (Holt, Mich./Holt HS) was able to get her body in front of the ball to prevent the score.
U-M continued its solid defense throughout the first half, with freshman goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) making two of her four saves before halftime. Michigan nearly increased its lead to two goals with just over 13 minutes left until the break when Kleinholz went one-on-one with a Badger defender, but Sonderman was able to dive and make the stop.
Michigan's final scoring opportunity of the first half came in the last 10 minutes, as Morgan fed the ball to sophomore Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS), who ran the ball up the right side. Heaton then made a nice centering pass to freshman Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa HS), but her shot sailed high over the net and out of bounds.
Wisconsin entered the second half with a more aggressive approach on the offensive end, but U-M's defense continued to hold its ground. The Wolverines were able to clear out Wisconsin's three second-half corner kicks, and Tuura stopped both shots she faced. Kramer nearly scored her second goal with 30 minutes remaining in the game, taking a long pass from Chavez and beating her defender to the ball, but her shot was blocked by Sonderman.
The Maize and Blue sealed the win in the final three minutes, when Heaton headed the ball behind her defender in the box to Morgan, who raced past Sonderman for a wide-open goal to put the game away.
Michigan returns to the U-M Soccer Field on Sunday (Sept. 28) for a Big Ten meeting with Minnesota. The match is set to start at 1 p.m.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the game "By scoring early, it sets the tone for the whole game. We have had those types of chances a few times this season and have not been able to finish. With Katie (Kramer) doing it here today, it gave us the confidence we were looking for."
On Megan Tuura "For a freshman she is really composed, she communicates and organizes well and comes us big when we need her to. She makes the key saves that keep us in the game and that is what you need from your goalkeeper."
On the second goal "With five minutes left, it was good to get that insurance goal because they were pressuring us from 12 minutes on. We were playing solid defense with the one-goal lead, but to get that cushion, you can't beat that."
On what its means to get their first win in Big Ten play "It means everything to us. It is a new season, let's see if we can turn a few things around, and it started with this game."
On what it takes to continue to be competitive in the Big Ten "If we can play the way we did today and have the confidence and the mentality to finish balls and create chances; I think we are going to be right there competing."
