Michigan Ties for Sixth in Season-Opening Tournament

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team swung into its 2003-04 season with a tie for sixth place after a 941 54-hole team total at the Mary Fossum Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 20-21) at Forest Akers West. The Wolverines opened with a 313-team total and followed with back-to-back 314s to tie Notre Dame (314-311-316) for the sixth position.
Playing in her first collegiate tournament, freshman Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) led the Wolverines with a 234 tournament total. After opening with an 81, she rallied back with a 79 in the second round and recorded a U-M tournament-best two-over 74 in the third round to help her to a tie for 21st.
Junior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) was right behind Broderick with a 235 total. After opening with a three-over 75 in the first round, trouble struck in second round as she recorded an 82. In the final round, she worked out some kinks but struggled with the putter, carding a 78 giving her a tie for 24th. Sophomore Amy Schmucker (Cold Springs, Minn./Rocori HS) tied for 26th with a 236 total after carding back-to-back 77s on the first day and a final round of 82.
Playing in her first collegiate tournament, freshman Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) tied for 31st with a 237 total. After opening with an 80, she recovered in the second round with a four-over 76 and closed with an 81. Senior Sarah Kruer (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) tied for 49th (81-82-81/244), while senior/junior Courtney Goebel (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS), competing as an individual, tied for 64th (81-83-84/248).
Host Michigan State led from start to finish as the Spartans took home both the team title and medalist honors. Michigan State (299-302-300/901) won by 25 strokes over second-place Kent State (314-311-301/926). Arkansas was third (314-308-312/934). Spartan Allison Fouch (72-77-73) tied with Arkansas' Courtney Mahon (73-74-75) for the individual lead at 222 after 54 holes, forcing a playoff. It did not last long as Fouch took advantage on the first playoff hole to give the Green and White the sweep of the trophies.
The Wolverines will swing into their next tournament next weekend as they travel to Columbus, Ohio, to compete in the Lady Northern, Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 27-28). In what will be a preview of the 2004 Big Ten Championships, the 15-team field with play the 54-hole tournament at OSU's Scarlet Course.

Freshmen Brianna Broderick and Ali Stinson both made their collegiate debuts at the Mary Fossum Invitational. Broderick tied for 21st, leading the Wolverine squad with a 234 total (81-79-74), while Stinson tied for 31st with a 237 total (80-76-81).
Laura Olin extended her consecutive tournament streak to 26 by playing at the Mary Fossum Invitational. She has not missed a tournament in her three seasons. Amy Schmucker also added to her streak as she sits at 14 straight tournaments.
