TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team closed out play in the Florida State Invitational Saturday evening (Aug. 30), falling by a 3-1 margin (22-30, 25-30, 30-21, 21-30) to host Florida State in the final match of the two-day event. A trio of Wolverines recorded double-digit kills, led by junior Jennifer Gandolph (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS), who notched 15 terminations for the second straight match.
Michigan fell to 0-2 against Florida State in the history of the series, which began in 1997. In addition, the Wolverines, who were 2-12 in opponents' arenas last season, extended their road losing streak to six matches, with five of those coming at the end of the 2002 campaign.
Seniors Chantel Reedus (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) and Erin Moore (Tiffin, Ohio/Columbian HS) aided Gandolph, recording 12 and 11 kills, respectively, as the Wolverines hit just .088 for the match. The Seminoles only hit .186 but used strong play at the net to defeat U-M, out-blocking Michigan 16-6.
On the defensive side of the net, freshman Megan Bowman (St. John, Ind./Lake Central HS), making her first collegiate start, tallied a team-high five block assists, while junior Sarah Allen (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg HS) posted a team-best eight digs.
The Wolverines return to Ann Arbor to open the home portion of their schedule with the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge Friday through Sunday (Sept. 5-7) at Cliff Keen Arena. U-M will begin play in the event with a 7 p.m. outing against Murray State on Friday, while No. 22 Louisville and Texas A&M will open the weekend with a 3:30 p.m. affair.
QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Mark Rosen
On the match ... "We're just not a very good volleyball team right now, and we're not doing the things that need to be done to be successful. We're extremely inconsistent in a lot of aspects, with the worst being serving and defense. Florida State is a nice team but not a team we should have lost to, and when we made mistakes, they took advantage of them. We just need to get back into the gym and get ready for next week."
