Qualifying for the NCAAs
Based on results from the 2002 NCAA Championships, Zone C will send four divers to the national meet this year. To fill one of those four spots a diver can either win the one-meter springboard, finish first or second on the three-meter springboard or win the platform event. Once a diver qualifies for the NCAA Championships, she will then dive subsequent events as an exhibition diver. If that diver's score is high enough to qualify for the NCAA meet in a second event, the next diver listed in that same event would qualify.
How They Got There
The Wolverines qualified for the NCAA Zone C Diving meet with success in a variety of events. Tealin Kelemen was U-M's top scorer in the one-meter event in both dual and championship meets. Kelemen's mark of 297.00 at Illinois was a team high and easily eclipsed the one-meter qualification score of 255 points. The Illinois meet was also important for Alexis Goolik, Emily Koglin and Kelly Vander Kuyl as the three also posted qualification scores in both the one- and three-meter events there.

Last Year at NCAA Diving Zones
Tealin Kelemen and Kelly Vander Kuyl represented the Wolverines at the 2002 NCAA Zone C Diving Meet (March 15-16) in West Lafayette, Ind., but were unable to capture a coveted berth into the NCAA Championships. Both divers took part in the one- and three-meter competitions, with Vander Kuyl also competing in platform diving, but were unable to advance in former Michigan head diving coach Dick Kimball's last season at the helm of the diving program. Michigan's best finish came from Vander Kuyl, who placed seventh in the platform with a score of 335.25. Kelemen was the Maize and Blue's top finisher on the one-meter springboard, in 23rd place, with Vander Kuyl on her heels in 28th. Vander Kuyl was U-M's highest finisher in the three-meter competition (28th). Kelemen was 30th overall from three meters.
Last Diving Meet: at the Big Ten Championships
Michigan's divers helped the Wolverines to a fourth-place finish at the 2003 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, Feb. 19-22, in West Lafayette, Ind. The Maize and Blue's consistent improvement throughout the meet began in the one-meter competition. Tealin Kelemen and Kelly Vander Kuyl were Michigan's top two finishers in the event, taking 15th and 20th, respectively, with their top one-meter championship scoring marks of the season. The Wolverines fared better in the second day of competition, as three divers advanced to the semifinals of the three-meter springboard. Kelemen placed 14th with a score of 427.65, while Vander Kuyl and Alexis Goolik wound up 19th and 20th, respectively. Michigan's team score was boosted in the platform on the final day of the championships by Vander Kuyl, Goolik, Kelemen and Koglin, who all earned points with finishes among the conference's top 16 divers. Vander Kuyl's 10th-place finish in the platform was the Wolverines' top diving finish of the meet. In the pool, Wolverine juniors Sara Johnson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) and Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Gallagher HS) won Big Ten titles, while U-M also received runner-up performances from Johnson, juniors Anne Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) and Emily-Clare Fenn (Westport, Conn./Staples HS).
'T' Time
Tealin Kelemen began the 2002-03 season on a tear, winning seven of the season's first eight diving events and earning Big Ten Diver of the Week honors twice, after her performances on the one- and three-meter springboards against Florida (Oct. 24) and at the Nike Cup (Nov. 21-23).
First Trip
Sophomore Alexis Goolik and senior/junior Emily Koglin will be making their first career appearances in the Zone C Diving Meet. Tealin Kelemen and Kelly Vander Kuyl will each be making her third consecutive zone diving appearance.
