COLUMBUS, Ga. -- After having both games Friday (Feb. 21) postponed, the No. 15-ranked University of Michigan softball team finally got in its first game of the NFCA Leadoff Classic Saturday night (Feb. 22) with a 6-1 win over Temple thanks to a complete-game effort from Marissa Young (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS) and key, late-inning home runs from both Jennifer Olds (Riviera Beach, Fla./Suncoast HS) and Michelle Teschler (Casco, Mich./Richmond HS).
The Wolverines (4-2) were trailing No. 5 Washington 2-0 in the fifth inning of their second game when that contest was suspended until 10 a.m. tomorrow due to rain. Michigan's final game in pool play vs. No. 16 South Carolina is now slated for a 1 p.m. start tomorrow.
The Wolverines got on the board first against Temple with a two-out, run-scoring single from Melinda Moulden (LaCrescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley HS) in the third, but that was it through the first five frames for the Michigan offense. Temple finally got to Young in the fifth and tied the game at one. However, the Wolverine bats answered right back in the top of the sixth with Olds providing a two-run shot.
Teschler then put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with a three-run dinger for the final 6-1 tally.
N O T E S
Jennifer Olds and Michelle Teschler now share the team lead with three home runs apiece.
The Wolverines have hit multiple home runs in five of their first six games this season.
