U-M Ends Losing Streak with Commanding Win Over Toledo

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team broke a three-match losing skid with a 7-0 shutout of Toledo on Saturday (Feb. 15) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (4-4) used wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to claim the doubles point, then won all six matches in singles to secure the team victory.

Rolf teamed with Michael Rubin for an 8-1 victory in the No. 1 doubles match.

Michigan began the afternoon by winning two of three in doubles to earn the first point of the match. Senior Chris Rolf (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) and sophomore Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) teamed at No.1 for an easy 8-1 victory over Dipesh Rao and Todd Wojkowski. Seeing his first career doubles action in dual match season play, sophomore David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) teamed with sophomore Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) for an 8-2 win over Mirsad Begic and Freddy Gomez at No. 3, clinching the doubles point for U-M. The Rockets prevented the doubles sweep by earning a win at the No.2 spot.

U-M steamrolled through the singles competition, posting wins in all six matches. Anving picked up his sixth win of the dual match season, winning at No. 3 over Wojtkowski 6-3, 4-1(ret.). Gossain followed with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win over Begic at No. 5. Junior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) posted an identical 6-1, 6-1 score in his win over Khalid Al Nabhani at No. 2, and Fischer kept things going with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 4 over Tony Tran. Playing in his second match of the dual season, freshman Carey Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) won in a super tiebreaker, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0(2), over Gomez at the No. 6 spot. Michael Rubin completed the singles sweep for U-M, posting a 7-6(3), 6-3 win over Rao at No. 1.
 
Michigan's match with Indiana State that was scheduled tomorrow (Feb. 16) at the Varsity Tennis Center has been postponed due to inclement weather conditions in Indiana. The match will be rescheduled, with the date and time to be announced later. The Wolverines return to action next Saturday (Feb. 22) against Butler in a match slated to start at noon at the Varsity Tennis Center.
