PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Two senior members of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team collected Big Ten Conference weekly awards today (Tuesday, Nov. 25). Anne Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) garnered Swimmer of the Week accolades, while Tealin Kelemen (Riverton, N.J./Moorestown Friends School) was named the league's Diver of the Week. It marks the first conference honor of the season for Weilbacher, while Kelemen was named the Big Ten's top diver for the second time in three weeks. Weilbacher and Kelemen earned the distinction after outstanding performances in U-M's runner-up finish at last weekend's Nike Cup (Nov. 20-22) in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Weilbacher captured two individual titles and was a part of four winning relay squads during the three-day event. She posted an NCAA consideration time of 23.25 to win the 50-yard freestyle on the first day and followed with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 53.56 to win the 100-yard butterfly title on the second day. Her winning time in the 100-yard butterfly also set a Koury Natatorium record. Weilbacher helped Michigan claim victories in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard medley relay, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. Three of the four relay times met the NCAA consideration standard.
Kelemen, who was named Big Ten Diver of the Week on Nov. 12, won both diving events at the Nike Cup. Kelemen posted a score of 546.80 on the one-meter springboard on the first day before taking the top spot in the three-meter event on the final day with a score of 521.45. It is the fourth time in her four-year career that she has earned the Big Ten award.
The Wolverines will be back in action in two weeks at the Eastern Michigan Invitational (Dec. 5-6) in Ypsilanti, Mich. Several members of Wolverines will take part in the U.S. Open that same weekend (Dec. 4-6) in Federal Way, Wash.
