CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team holds onto second place after two days of competition at the Nike Cup held at Koury Natatorium on the Unversity of North Carolina campus. U-M won three of the seven events Friday (Nov. 21) and has accumulated 504 points, but the Wolverines still trail the host Tar Heels (616 points).
The Wolverines started off the day by capturing first place in the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of freshman Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant HS), senior Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson HS), senior Anne Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) and sophomore Abby Seskevics (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) beat out Louisiana State's relay team by more than a second to claim the title (1:43.36) and 40 points for Michigan.
Weilbacher followed her relay performance with a spectacular showing in the 100-yard butterfly. Weilbacher posted a Michigan record and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 53.56 in the victory. The mark surpassed her previous school record of 53.61 set last season and was also a Koury Natatorium record.
U-M's top finisher in the 200-yard freestyle event was freshman Susan Gilliam (Los Angeles, Calif./Bolles HS), who touched the wall at an NCAA consideration time of 1:50.62 to claim fourth place. Freshman Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) also set a "B" standard of 1:49.76 with her fifth-place finish.
Kelli Stein also posted an NCAA consideration time in the 100-yard breastroke, clocking in at 1:02.89 to claim the first-place prize. Brady swam to a fifth-place finish with an NCAA consideration time of 55:98 in the 100-yard backstroke race.
The team of Smith, Gilliam, Seskevics and Weilbacher was the runner-up in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:25.47, just over one second behind North Carolina (7:24.09).
Competition at the Nike Cup concludes Saturday (Nov. 22), with preliminary events beginning at 10 a.m. and the finals starting at 6 p.m. each day at Koury Natatorium.
