Michigan Swims to Second-Place Showing at Nike Cup

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team finished in second place after the final day of the Nike Cup (Nov. 22) at North Carolina's Koury Natatorium. The Wolverines, who completed the three-day event with 748 points, could not surmount the host Tar Heels' first-place point total of 884.
Michigan took top honors in two events on the final day, as the quartet of senior Anne Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales, freshman Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS), freshman Susan Gilliam (Los Angeles, Calif./Bolles HS) and sophomore Abby Seskevics (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) won the 400-yard freestyle with an NCAA consideration time of 3:24.25.
Senior Tealin Kelemen (Riverton, N.J./Moorestown Friends School) provided the Wolverines with their second win of the day, scoring 521.45 on the three meter diving board to take first place.
Gilliam had a strong showing in the 1,650-yard freestyle, swimming to a second-place finish with an NCAA consideration time of 16:30.00. Seskevics also posted an NCAA consideration time, placing second in the 100-yard freestyle (51.04).
Rounding out Michigan's top-five appearances on the third day were seniors Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson HS) and Weilbacher. Stein took the third spot in the 200-yard breastroke race with a time of 2:20.49, while Weilbacher clocked in at 2:02.92 to take fifth in the 200-yard butterfly event.
The Wolverines will be back in action in two weeks at the Eastern Michigan Invitational (Dec. 5-6) in Ypsilanti, Mich. Several members of Wolverines will take part in the U.S. Open that same weekend (Dec. 4-6) in Federal Way, Wash.
