STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat to No. 16-ranked Penn State Sunday afternoon (Oct. 5) in front of 1,244 fans at Jeffrey Field. The Nittany Lions (10-2-2, 4-1 Big Ten) dominated the shot category by a 20-2 margin and Tiffany Weimer netted two goals to lead PSU to victory.
Penn State's first score came in the 38th minute, as Joanna Lohman found Weimer at the top of the box and she drew U-M goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) out of the net before chipping it over her head and into the left side of the cage.
Weimer, the 2002 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, added an insurance goal in the 57th minute, taking a long serve from Leigh Hamilton and quickly slamming the ball into the back of the net for her Big Ten-leading 13th goal of the season.
Meanwhile, the Wolverines were unable to generate any offense. U-M registered just a single shot in each period. PSU goalkeeper Amanda Brown did not face a shot on goal in the shutout victory.
The Wolverines (3-5-4, 2-2-2 Big Ten) will try to get back on track when they face Indiana on Friday (Oct. 10). The game is set for a 4 p.m. start at the U-M Soccer Field.

On the game ... "We were on our heels right from the start. We did not have a very good game. We were not fresh and we didn't rise to the occasion. Penn State had a good all-around performance. With a team that talented, you cannot afford to have a flat game like we had."
N O T E S
Suzie Grech had a season-best 10 saves against the Nittany Lions. Her career best is a 12-save effort against Minnesota back on Sept. 24, 2000.
The Wolverines are 4-8-3 all-time against Penn State.
