COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team picked up an important point in the Big Ten Conference standings Friday night (Oct. 3), playing No. 12-ranked Ohio State to a 1-1 draw in double overtime at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Senior forward Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) notched her second goal of the season midway through the first half for U-M's only score, while senior goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) made five saves in net to help preserve the tie.
The Buckeyes (7-1-2, 1-1-2 Big Ten) immediately pressured Michigan to start the contest, with Heather Miller registering the first shot of the game at 3:41, which was saved by Grech. The Wolverines responded with two shots of their own in the next three minutes. Junior Robyn Vince's (Holt, Mich./Holt HS) ball went wide of the net, while Chavez's first shot of the game was blocked. Michigan's defense was able to clear out two straight OSU corner kicks, while Grech made a save on Emily Gilbert's header at 15:05 to keep the game scoreless.
Nearly five minutes later, senior Erika Kleinholz (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) found Chavez at the right corner of the 18-yard box. Chavez collected the pass and fired a shot over extended goalkeeper Emily Hayman and into the top of the net to put Michigan ahead 1-0 with almost 25 minutes remaining in the first half.
The two teams went scoreless for the remaining of the half, as Hayman made saves on one shot by sophomore Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS) and two by junior Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS). The Wolverines outshot OSU 6-3 in the first frame.
Ohio State earned the momentum early in the second half after a yellow card was thrown on Kleinholz at 50:15. Two minutes later, Grech made another save on a shot by Gilbert. OSU kept possession of the ball and Emily Francis rifled a shot wide of the net.
The Buckeyes scored the equalizer at 62:13, when Kathy Fulk took a pass from Danielle Dietrich and scored from the outside right of the 18-yard box past the outstreched arms of Grech.
Neither team was able to find the net again in regulation, as Michigan's next six shots were either off the mark or blocked by the Buckeye defense. OSU also reeled off six more shots before the end the half, with Grech stopping another attempt by Miller at 79:29.
In the first extra period, Ohio State's only chance came at 95:29, when Liz Mumley's shot went wide right of the goal. Morgan nearly won it for Wolverines at 97:25, but her shot was stopped by reserve goalkeeper Staci Sinkway.
Ten extra minutes were not enough to break the tie, as each squad posted just one shot in the second overtime. Chavez's third shot of the game at 107:06 went wide and the clock eventually ran out.
The Wolverines (3-4-4, 2-1-2 Big Ten) finish out the weekend against No. 16-ranked Penn State on Sunday (Oct. 5) in State College, Pa. The match is scheduled for a noon start at Jeffrey Field.

On the game ... "We had an opportunity to win this game a couple times. I thought we played very hard and as well as we did last weekend. I couldn't have asked for anything more. We knew that Ohio State was an excellent team and we knew what to expect."
