Michigan Places Runner-up to Host at Florida Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team swam to a second-place finish this afternoon (Saturday, Oct. 18) at the Florida Invitational held at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium. The Wolverines posted first-place times in four of the 10 events and earned the second spot with 92 points behind first-place Florida (238). Floida Atlantic (74) and Indian River Community College (32) finished third and fourth, respectively.
U-M got off to a fast start, earning its first victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant HS), Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson HS), Anne Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) and Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy HS) edged out Florida with a time of 1:44.70.
The Wolverines had four swimmers in the top 10 of the 50-yard freestyle. Sophomore Abby Seskevics (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) took fourth place with a time of 24.54 to lead U-M in the event.
Weilbacher took top honors in the 100-yard butterfly, touching in at 55.54. Brady won her second backstroke title of the weekend, posting a time of 57.47 in the 100-yard event. Kelli Stein had a strong showing in the 100-yard breastroke, taking second place (1:04.44).
U-M finished the event in winning fashion, earning the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Brady, Weilbacher, Seskevics and Tracy Egnatuk (Albion, Mich./Albion Senior HS) earned a time of 1:35.71, which was more than two seconds faster than runner-up Florida.
Michigan returns to the pool on Tuesday (Oct. 21) when it takes on Toledo in a 7:30 p.m. dual meet in Toledo, Ohio.
