Brady Helps Michigan Breeze to Road Win Over Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team put forth a solid all-around effort tonight (Tuesday, Oct. 21), defeating Toledo 179-113 at the UT Student Recreation Center. The Wolverines (2-1) swam to first-place finishes in the first 13 events before exhibitioning the last three, and freshman Susan Gilliam (Los Angeles, Calif./Bolles HS) and senior Anne Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) posted NCAA consideration times in the 1,650-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, respectively.
U-M earned its second 200-yard medley relay title of the season, as Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant HS), Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson HS), Weilbacher and Abby Seskevics (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) posted a pool-record 1:45.29 time, nearly six seconds ahead of runner-up Toledo.
Brady led the Wolverines with three individual titles against the Rockets. Brady swam to a first-place time of 58.29 in the 100-yard backstroke before winning the 50-yard freestyle event (24.50). Brady finished the meet with a win in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.10) for her fifth title of the year.
Gilliam posted an NCAA consideration time of 16:48.46 in the 1,650-yard freestyle for her second title of 2003. Senior Emily-Clare Fenn (Westport, Conn./Staples HS) placed second with a time of 17:02.18. Gilliam later posted a first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 4:59.47.
Freshman Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) claimed the first of two individual titles with a time of 1:53.71 in the 200-yard freestyle. Smith followed that performance with a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (53.17).
Kelli Stein won her second breastroke title of the year, touching in at a pool-record 1:04.77 in the 100-yard event. Sophomore Elsa Larson (Portland, Ore./Lincoln HS) and freshman Annie Stein (Longmont, Colo./Germantown Academy) picked up their first wins of the season in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard butterly, respectively.
Rounding out the U-M individual winners was Weilbacher, who swam to an NCAA consideration time of 55.18 with her win in the 100-yard butterfly event.
In the diving competition, freshman Julie Porter (Haverford, Pa./The Episcopal Academy) took first on the one-meter board (223.79), although junior Alexis Goolik's (Highland, Ind./Highland HS) non-scoring mark of 247.28 was the top total. Goolik also had the best mark on the three-meter board (256.28) as an exhibition competitor, and U-M's exhibition entries in the 400-yard individual medley and 200-yard freestyle relay had the events' top times, with Annie Stein setting a pool record in the 400 IM.
Michigan opens its home schedule against Florida State and Michigan State on Nov. 7. The tri-meet is slated for a 5 p.m. start at Canham Natatorium.
