"We are pleased Doug has joined the program," said first-year coach Sapp. "He has a strong background in the game of golf and will have a tremendous impact recruiting after graduating from Michigan and then working with the American Junior Golf Association. He has seen and worked with some of the best junior golfers in the country and that adds a lot to our program."
"I am very excited to be coming to the University of Michigan," said Gross. "It will be equally exciting to get a chance to be involved with intercollegiate athletics and coaching. I have been involved with golf for a long time and I am looking forward to working with the student-athletes and getting the opportunity to become a coach. After graduating a few years ago, to come back to Michigan makes this very special. I want to do whatever I can do to help Coach Sapp and this program achieve all of its goals."
For the past four years (1999-2002), Gross has been working with the AJGA as a tournament director. He led the planning for 13 AJGA championships, and along with a staff of 10, was in charge of the overall tournament administration -- planning and scheduling, course marking, rules officiating and budget maintenance. Prior to being named tournament director, Gross served as an assistant tournament director of the AJGA in the summer of 1999, when he directed the summer interns, assisted in golf course preparations and was the liaison between the golf course superintendents and the AJGA staff. In the summer of 1998, Gross was a tournament operations intern, assisting the tournament director in the day-to-day operations of the AJGA.
A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., Gross earned a sports management and communications degree from U-M in 1999. While at Michigan, he worked as a sports supervisor in the Department of Recreational Sports, where he was responsible for more than 20 sports.
