ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Senior Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) had a goal and an assist to help the No. 18-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team start it 2002 campaign with a 2-1 exhibition win over Missouri this afternoon (Sunday, Aug. 25) at Chaminade High School Field.
The Wolverines struck first when, in the 15th minute, senior defender Vicky Whitley (Spring, Texas/Klein HS) sent the ball over the Missouri defense where Crumpton collected it, taking it inside the opponents' six-yard box. Crumpton put her shot toward the net and deflected it off a Tiger defender and into the goal.
The game went back and forth through the rest of the half, with Missouri finding the equalizer 10 minutes before halftime on Adriene Davis' tally.
Michigan readjusted at the half in order to conserve energy in the 90-degree heat. Making the most of their opportunities, the Wolverines took a one-goal advantage on freshman Stephanie Boyles' (Arvada, Colo./Pomona HS) goal in the 73rd minute. With the ball deep in Missouri territory, Crumpton sent a pass back to Boyles from the end line. Boyles ran onto the ball and sent her shot past Missouri's keeper for the game-winning goal.
The Maize and Blue opens its 2002 regular season against No. 13 Florida on Friday (Aug. 30). Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Field.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the game ... "I thought the game went really well. It was a pretty hot day, but we did well to create a lot of chances for ourselves. Overall, the game went back and forth but I felt we had the majority of chances. We certainly had more in the first half. It was a tough, physical game. I'm pleased with how we played."
On her thoughts about how the team played ... "It was a good first showing. I was really pleased with how the well our freshmen played and with the play of our goalkeepers (Annie Padrid and Rebecca Bald), who didn't have any collegiate experience coming into today. Everyone went out and put forth a good effort."
