Both rowers are being recognized for their efforts in the first varsity eight, which included a second-place finish at the Big Ten Conference Championships, a second-place finish at the Central Region Championships and a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Their efforts also helped the team to its fifth consecutive Central Region championship and fifth consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships.
McBratney and Meyer both rowed in the first varsity eight for each race of the 2002 season. McBratney spent the entire season in the seven seat, while Meyer solidified the bow before moving to the engine room for the final two regattas.
McBratney and Meyer have each earned other awards during their careers at Michigan. Both were named to the 2002 CRCA All-Central Region first team, making them eligible for the All-America honor, and the 2002 All-Big Ten first team. McBratney was also a member of the 2001 All-Big Ten second team, while Meyer was named to the Academic All-Big Ten team each of the three years in which she was eligible (2000-02).
This marks the second consecutive year in which Michigan has placed two rowers on the All-America first team, as Kate Johnson (1998-2001) and Bernadette Marten (2001) were each selected for the honor following the 2001 season.
The All-America award is designed to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains. The criteria include meeting eligibility rules as defined by the athletes institution, and participating in at least 75 percent of the seasons races in the first varsity boat, and the student-athletes head coach must be a member in good standing of the CRCA.
For each region, 12 rowers and, if nominated, a coxswain received first team honors, and the same number receiving second team honors. The All-America first and second teams were selected by the regional chairpersons following the NCAA Championships from the rowers who received All-Region first team honors.
