ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan's Leah Ketcheson (Belleville, Ontario/Bayside SS) has been named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year for rowing. She is the first U-M rower to earn the award in the three years the sport has been sponsored by the conference.

Ketcheson led the Wolverines' first varsity eight, which has been ranked among the top 10 in the nation the entire season, to Big Ten Boat of the Week honors after upsetting then-No. 3 Ohio State at the Buckeye Invitational (April 13). During winter training, she set the U-M freshman 2,000-meter record on the ergometer with a time of 6:56.
Michigan, which finished runner-up at this year's Big Ten Championships after winning the first two league titles (2000, '01), returns to the water next weekend (May 18-19) at the Central Region Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
