The five other teams in the 1 p.m. CDT session of the preliminaries are No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Utah, No. 6 Louisiana State, No. 8 Nebraska and No. 12 Arizona. No. 2 Alabama, the host of the championships, will compete in the evening session (7 p.m. CDT) against No. 1 UCLA, No. 10 Stanford, No. 11 Minnesota, No. 13 Oregon State and No. 15 Florida. The top three teams in each session advance to the NCAA Super Six Team Finals and a chance at the team title the following evening (Friday, April 19) at 7 p.m. CDT.
Each session will also have six individual all-around competitors participating with the teams. All-around competitor Sissy Huey of Iowa State will join the Wolverines for the preliminary competition. Shelly Kringen, also a Cyclone, will join U-M for only the balance beam after winning the event at the NCAA Central Region Championships on Saturday (April 6) in Baton Rouge, La.
In addition to the team competition, the top four individuals in each event (plus ties) from each preliminary session will compete in the individual event finals on Saturday, April 20, at 7 p.m. CDT. The individual all-around winner will be determined during Thursday's team preliminary competition.
Michigan qualified for its 10th consecutive NCAA Championships with a second-place finish at the regional championships last Saturday (April 6). The Wolverines, who finished as the runner-up in 1995 and 1999, are looking for the program's first NCAA title.
