HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Battling windy and cold conditions for the second straight day and a two-hour snow delay at the start of the final round, the University of Michigan men's golf team shot 298 for a 54-hole total of 894 and held onto its seventh-place position at the Marshall Invitational Saturday (April 6) at Guyan Golf and Country Club. Senior Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) led the Wolverines with his third top-10 finish of the season as he tied for ninth in the 104-player field.

Light snow that fell overnight left nearly an inch of snow on the course for the start of the final round, but after a two-hour snow delay play was resumed. With third-round temperatures dipping below 40 degrees, the Wolverines had a consistent final round as Scott Carlton (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS), Kyle Kilcherman (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) and David Nichols (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) all carded three-over-par 74s to help the Wolverines to their 298 team total.
In addition to Chapman's tie for ninth (69-75-76/220), Carlton had a season-best finish as he tied for 12th (75-72-74/221). Kilcherman tied for 42nd (78-75-74/227), Nichols tied for 62nd (74-82-74/230) and Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) tied for 74th (77-79-77/233).
Toledo took home the tournament title after rounds of 289-296-292 for an 877 total. Illinois (295-293-296/884) was the runner-up and Ohio State (298-295-295/888) was third. Kentucky's John Holmes won the individual medalist honors after an even-par tournament. Holmes fired three straight 71s for a 213 total. Ohio State's Doug Wade (73-73-71/217) and Illinois' Geoff Lound (77-67-73/217) shared individual runner-up honors.
The Wolverines will next head to Columbus, Ohio, Friday through Sunday (April 12-14) for the Kepler Invitational at Ohio State's Scarlet Course, the site of the 2002 NCAA Championships. Last year, the Maize and Blue finished third of the 17 competing teams and Matthews tied his career-best finish with a tie for third individually (74-71-75/220).

Scott Carlton had his season-best performance at the Marshall Invitational, tying for 12th. His previous best this season was a tie for 27th at the Wolverine Invitational (Sept. 28-30). In addition, his round of one-over-par 72 in the second round was also a season best. He had twice tallied 73s earlier this season in the first and second rounds of the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 8-9).
Andrew Chapman's first-round total of 69 was the third time this season and fifth time in his career he has scored below the 70-stroke barrier. Last week, he had a career-best 67 in the second round at the Johnny Owens Invitational (March 29-30).
Andy Matthews continued his streak of consecutive tournaments played. He now has played 45 straight tournaments for the Maize and Blue.
