Wolverines Top Hoosiers to Extend Win Streak to Five

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The 13th-ranked University of Michigan softball team extended its winning streak to five games on Friday (April 5) as it defeated Indiana 9-2 at the IU Softball Field. Marissa Young (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS) struck out 15 batters and allowed only two runs in seven innings of work, and Stephanie Volpe (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth-Salem HS) scored two runs and drove in another two. Monica Shock (Rialto, Calif./Eisenhower HS) and Melinda Moulden (LaCrescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley HS) also had two RBI each.

Michigan scored all the runs it would need to win early as it scored twice in each of the first two innings to garner a 4-0 lead. Michigan capitalized on errors by the Hoosiers, with three of the four runs being unearned. In the first inning, Kelsey Kollen (Cerritos, Calif./Santa Ana Mater Dei HS) scored on a fielder's choice of the bat of Volpe. Volpe advanced to third thanks to a single from Shock and a Young walk, and she scored on a sacrifice fly by Moulden. Kollen and Courtney Betley (Corona, Calif./Santa Ana Mater Dei HS) both tallied runs due to a throwing error in the second inning. Young did her part from the mound as she retired the first six batters that she faced.

In the top of the third inning Mack drove in Moulden for her second run of the day to give the Wolverines a 5-0 advantage. U-M would not hold that margin for long however, as Ashley Griffiths homered off of Young to start the third inning for the Hoosiers. Young recovered quickly to strike out the next three batters and end the inning.

Shock delivered for the Maize and Blue in the fourth with Volpe and Doe in scoring position. Shock singled to left-center, driving in the runners and putting the Wolverines up 7-1. Shock would eventually come around to score Michigan's third run of the inning and eighth of the game. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Young gave up another solo home run, a drive over the centerfield fence by Heather Stillians, to give Indiana its second run of the game. Once again, Young struck out the remaining batter to end the inning.

The defense picked up for both teams in the final innings, and there were no runs scored in the fifth and sixth. Michelle Teschler (Casco, Mich./Richmond HS) added an insurance run for the Wolverines in the seventh inning to cap off the scoring.

The teams will close out their two-game Big Ten Conference series with a noon contest on Saturday (April 6).
