Michigan Upsets No. 3 Ohio State at Buckeye Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The eighth-ranked University of Michigan rowing team traveled to the Scioto River for the Buckeye Classic today (Saturday, April 13) and came home with wins in eight of 12 races. The highlight of the day came in the final race when the Wolverines' first varsity eight (6:14.98) upset No. 3 Ohio State (6:17.74) by almost eight seats.
The win over the Buckeyes and a win over Clemson and Cincinnati in the morning session helped the first varsity eight improve to four victories in five races this season. The crew's only loss this year was to No. 6 Virginia in the season opener, but the boat has won three consecutive contests since that race.
Michigan's second varsity eight extended its winning streak to 14 races with an open-water win over Clemson and Cincinnati in the morning session. However, the steak came to an end in the afternoon when the boat crossed the finish line in 6:31.00, less than one second behind the Buckeyes' winning time of 6:30.24.
The Wolverines' first varsity four won both of its races at the regatta. U-M (7:42.55) crossed the finish line over 12 seconds before second-place Clemson (7:54.62) in the morning session. in the afternoon session Michigan, which finished in 7:19.64, was five seconds faster than the Buckeyes (7:24.87).
The Wolverines' opponent for the home regatta on Saturday, April 27, has not been determined. The team begins the postseason with the third annual Big Ten Conference Women's Rowing Championships on Saturday, May 4, in East Lansing, Mich.
