Event: ACC/Big Ten Double Dual
Next U-M Event: Saturday, April 6 -- at Michigan State (East Lansing, Mich.)
BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team opened the season by winning five of six varsity races against Duke and Virginia in the annual Atlantic Coast Conference/Big Ten Double Dual today (Saturday, March 30) in front of 300 fans at Van Buren Park. The Wolverines' first varsity four won two races, while the first varsity eight, second varsity eight and second varsity four each captured one win.
The regatta was divided into morning and afternoon sessions with the Wolverines racing Duke in the morning and Virginia in the afternoon. Ohio State faced Virginia in the morning and Duke in the afternoon, and Eastern Michigan, a first-year varsity program, joined the teams for several of the races.
Michigan won all three of its races during the morning session in cold, overcast conditions. The Wolverines' first varsity eight took an early lead and extended its advantage to nearly a full boat-length at the 1,500-meter mark. At that point, Duke made a move and walked through four seats to close the gap with the Wolverines. The Blue Devils continued to keep it close, but U-M, which crossed the finish line in 7:10.3, pulled out the win by 2.6 seconds.
The Wolverines' second varsity eight, the 2001 NCAA champion, extended its winning streak, which started at last season's ACC/Big Ten Double Dual, to 12 races despite catching a crab early in the race. The boat recovered to take an open-water lead at the halfway point of the race and continued to increase its lead until it crossed the finish line with a time of 7:07.3.
The first varsity four and second varsity four both competed against Duke in the morning. The first varsity four posted a time of 8:01.8 to win the race, while the second varsity four was third (8:32.6).
The sun came out but the wind picked up slightly for the afternoon session, making it a tough afternoon for the Wolverines. One of the races affected was the first varsity eight event, which resulted in one of the closest races of the day. Michigan got caught in rough water at the start of the race, and Virginia took an early lead. The lead remained bow-to-stern from the 300-meter mark to the 800-meter mark. The Wolverines made a move to close the gap, which gave them a chance to win the race. U-M rowed a great sprint but finished with a time of 7:18.0, less than a seat behind the Cavaliers, who posted a time of 7:17.3.
The second varsity eight was cancelled after U-M's boat started to take on water at the beginning of its scheduled race with Virginia. The teams raced about 250 meters before the judges stopped the event and rowers were taken out of the boat to allow it an opportunity to return safely to the boathouse.
Unlike the morning session, Michigan and Virginia raced separate races for the two fours. The Wolverines won both races, with the first varsity four crossing the finish line in 8:20.4 and the second varsity four in 7:56.0.
Michigan tests the water in East Lansing, Mich., next Saturday (April 6) when it faces Michigan State at Sleepy Hollow. The race gives the Wolverines an opportunity to race on the course where the Big Ten Conference Championships will be held on Saturday, May 4.

Michigan, Ohio State and Virginia each participated in the 2001 NCAA Championships on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Ga. The Wolverines took home second place, while Ohio State was fourth and Virginia was seventh.
Several of the races used a floating start, some starting as far as 100 to 300 meters down the course, due to the severe wind at the start of the course.
The course for today's regatta was 1,940 meters in length.
