MUNCIE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan tennis team rebounded from the previous day's setback against No. 32-ranked Indiana State by beating Ball State by a 5-2 score Sunday (March 24) at the YMCA Indoor Tennis Center. The Wolverines (9-5) swept the doubles to earn the team point and won four of the six singles matches against Cardinals (5-11).
Senior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and freshman Matt Lockin (Lilburn, Ga./S.D. Independent Study) continued their brilliance together and got things started for the Wolverines, posting an 8-2 victory over Chris Varga and Brad Rhodes at No. 2. Senior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) and sophomore Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 victory at No. 3. Junior Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) and sophomore Brett Baudinet (Auckland, New Zealand/King's College) iced the sweep with a 9-8 match victory at No. 1, winning the tiebreaker by a 7-4 score.
Playing without their regular No. 2 singles player, senior Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS), the Wolverines slid everyone up a slot in the lineup and managed to take four of the singles matches. Lockin and Novak won straight-set contests at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, while freshman David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskolu) won in three sets at No. 5. Beam, ranked No. 54 in the country, posted a come-from-behind 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2 victory against 149th-ranked Jason Pressel at the top spot. Ball State gained its two points in the match as Varga won 6-4, 6-2 over Jackson at No. 2 and Rhodes posted a 7-6(5), 6-4 victory against Baudinet at No. 6.
The Wolverines return to Ann Arbor and the Varsity Tennis Center Wednesday afternoon (March 27, 3 p.m.) against Midwest Regional foe and No. 7-ranked Notre Dame.
