ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Three first-period goals by Michigan proved to be all the host Wolverines would need en route to a 4-2 victory over St. Cloud State on Friday (March 22) in the second first-round game of NCAA Ice Hockey West Regional at Yost Ice Arena.

Jason Ryznar (Anchorage, Alaska) gave Michigan a 1-0 first-period lead at 4:09 before St. Cloud State countered just over a minute later when the Huskies' Jeff Finger tallied on the power play to tie the contest. The Wolverines were able to regain the advantage eight minutes later at 13:20 into the period on Craig Murray's (Penticton, B.C.) power-play marker. U-M then claimed a 3-1 margin within the next minute when Milan Gajic (Burnaby, B.C.) made a nifty pass to himself from behind the SCSU net and came back around to take the shot while falling. The puck proceeded to go through the pads of Huskies' netminder Dean Weasler.
The score remained that way until 4:19 of the third period, when SCSU converted on a power play as Jon Cullen put the puck into the net on a rebound in the slot to draw the Huskies within 3-2. However, SCSU could get no closer as the Wolverines scored for the fourth and final time at 14:40 when Dwight Helminen (Brighton, Mich.) wristed a backhander off a rebound which had hit the pipe and eluded Huskies' goalie Jake Moreland.
SCSU had several scoring opportunities in the time remaining but was thwarted each time by U-M goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.), who totaled 22 saves. For SCSU, Weasler had eight first-period saves before giving way to Moreland, who recorded a combined 12 saves in the final two periods.
