Michigan Tallies Home Victory Against Bowling Green

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan tennis team ended a two-match home losing streak, downing Bowling Green by a 6-1 score Tuesday afternoon (March 19) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (8-4) won a close doubles point that came down to a tiebreaker and steamrolled through singles competition with five straight-set victories, while the Falcons (9-8) won the only three-set match of the day.
Senior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) and sophomore Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) got things started for the Wolverines in doubles, posting a 8-2 victory against Mike Kossoff and Joel Carney at No. 3. Bowling Green pulled it even with an 8-6 at No. 1 as Vitek Wild and Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo bettered the junior duo of Chris Rolf (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) and Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.). The team point came down to a tiebreaker at No. 2, with senior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and freshman Matt Lockin (Lilburn, Ga./S.D. Independent Study) beating Milos Jirout and Ian Bliss by an 11-9 score in the tiebreaker for a 9-8 match score.
After closely contested doubles point, the Wolverines dominated the singles competition with five straight-set victories. Michigan gained its straight-set wins from Beam, Jackson, Lockin, freshman David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskolu) and freshman Josef Fischer (Nuremberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy, Fla.). The Falcons' only point of the match came as Carney posted a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory against Novak at No. 4.
The Wolverines continue non-conference regional competition this weekend in Indiana. Michigan travels to Terre Haute, Ind., for a matchup with Indiana State Saturday (March 23, 1 p.m.) and follows up with a match against Ball State Sunday (March 24, 1 p.m.) in Muncie, Ind.

N O T E S
Matt Lockin moved one victory away from the 20-win plateau in singles this season. He has a team-best 19-8 overall singles record and is 10-2 in dual matches.
Lockin and Henry Beam have been stretched to a tiebreaker in doubles competition three straight matches, winning two of those three contests. The duo is 11-1 in dual match action this season, with Lockin pacing the team with 14 overall doubles victories (14-4) and Beam ranking second with 11 wins (11-1).
The victory at No. 6 singles by Josef Fischer was the first of his collegiate career. Fischer played in only one previous match since joining the team in January, a three-set loss against Northwestern.
