This Week
Two members of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team will head to West Lafayette, Ind., to participate in the NCAA Zone C Diving Meet on Friday and Saturday (March 15-16) in the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Michigan sophomore Tealin Kelemen (Riverton, N.J./Moorestown Friends School) and junior Kelly Vander Kuyl (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) will compete in hopes being among the seven divers from Zone C to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Vander Kuyl will dive in all three events this weekend, while Kelemen will compete only on the one- and three-meter boards. The Wolverine swimmers are not scheduled to compete again until the NCAA Championships, which will be held Thursday through Saturday, March 21-23, in Austin, Texas.

How They Got There
Sophomore Tealin Kelemen earned zone qualifying marks in all three events this season and junior Kelly Vander Kuyl qualified with a mark of 365.30 on the platform at the Big Ten Championships. Kelemen's top marks in a dual meet came against Notre Dame when she posted a score of 281.92 on the one-meter and 301.95 on the three-meter. On the platform, Kelemen's score of 366.55 edged out Vander Kuyl for fourth place at the Big Ten Championships.

Last Year's Zone
Tealin Kelemen and Kelly Vander Kuyl traveled to Counsilman and Billingsley Aquatic Center at Indiana University to compete in the 2001 NCAA Zone C Diving Meet (March 9-10). Kelemen placed 12th in the one-meter event (231.30) and 11th in three-meter diving (405.75). Vander Kuyl placed 27th overall in one-meter (202.60) and 30th in three-meter (199.45). On the platform, Vander Kuyl finished in fourth place (328.35).
Kimball's Last Time
This week will mark the final NCAA Zone Diving meet for legendary Michigan diving coach Dick Kimball, who will retire this year after 43 seasons on the U-M coaching staff. As a competitor and coach, Kimball has been part of five NCAA national championship teams and 33 Big Ten Conference championship teams with the U-M men and women. He has coached nine Olympic medalists, including gold medalists Bob Webster (1960 and '64, platform), Micki King ('72, three-meter), Phil Boggs ('76, three-meter) and Mark Lenzi ('92, three-meter).
Last Meet Recap
Michigan hosted the Big Ten Conference Championships Feb. 21-23 at Canham Natatorium and posted 343 points en route to a fifth-place finish. Highlighting the meet for the Maize and Blue was sophomore Annie Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) as she finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.68. Freshman Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy HS) made an impressive debut in the mile by placing third with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 16:27.76, while senior Lindsay Carlberg (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) closed out her last Big Ten Championships in a nice fashion by placing fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 55.79.
In the relays, the Wolverines picked up the most points in the 400-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay with runner-up performances in both events. Weilbacher, juniors Erin Abbey (Cleveland, Ohio/Mayfield HS) and Laura Kaznecki (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Western HS) and sophomore Sara Johnson (West Bloomfield, Mich./Lahser HS) combined for a time of 3:22.93 in the 400-yard freestyle relay, while Abbey, Weilbacher and Kaznecki joined with sophomore Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson HS) for a mark of 1:41.59 in the 200 medley relay.
Four Swimmers Headed to NCAA Meet
Divers Tealin Kelemen and Kelly Vander Kuyl will be trying to join the list of Wolverines headed to the NCAA Championships March 21-23 in Austin, Texas. Four U-M swimmers are in the field, including three -- Amy McCullough, Lindsay Carlberg and Annie Weilbacher -- who posted NCAA automatic qualifying times. Kelli Stein will also represent Michigan at the NCAA meet.

The Top 25
Michigan moved up two spots to No. 16 in the latest Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America poll, which was released on March 1. Penn State is the only Big Ten school ranked ahead of Michigan at No. 13, while Wisconsin (No. 17), Northwestern (No. 18), Indiana (No. 21) and Purdue (No. 22) also represent the league.
